Challenge
Industrial biotechnology companies increasingly seek sustainable microbial production platforms that can deliver high biomass yields while avoiding the regulatory complexity associated with genetically modified organisms (GMOs). However, identifying naturally occurring fungal strains with superior production characteristics is often time-consuming and resource-intensive.
Solution
Alagene partnered with a client developing a fungal-based biotechnology platform to improve strain performance while maintaining a non-GMO approach. Leveraging our computational biology capabilities and cell engineering expertise, we designed and implemented a systematic strain development workflow.
The project combined computational analysis, strain characterization, and high-throughput screening to identify fungal variants with enhanced growth and production characteristics. Promising candidates were further evaluated under process-relevant conditions to assess scalability and manufacturing potential.
Results
The development program successfully generated a high-performance non-GMO fungal production strain demonstrating improved biomass productivity and enhanced process robustness.
Key outcomes included:
1. Identification of superior fungal variants through data-driven screening
2. Improved biomass accumulation and growth performance
3. Preservation of non-GMO status
4. Enhanced suitability for industrial-scale fermentation
5. Establishment of a scalable platform for future product development Impact
This project demonstrates how Alagene's integrated computational biology and strain development capabilities can accelerate the creation of commercially relevant microbial platforms. By combining advanced screening methodologies with practical bioprocess considerations, we help partners reduce development timelines and advance sustainable biomanufacturing solutions toward commercialization.
